Ori Pei Pug / Shar-Pei Cross
Bubby, the Ori-Pei as a 9 week old puppy "We added Bubby (5th generation Ori Pei) to our family on 01/27/07. Bubby (AKA "the Bubz") was 9 weeks old and only 4 lbs when we brought him home with us He has truly changed our lives for the better! Bubby has been such a loveable and loyal companion thus far and our relationship is only getting better as he matures. Bubby was a handful when we first brought him home (as all puppies are) and he kept us on our toes for the first few weeks. Bubby now stands approximately 16" tall at the shoulder and weighs 37 lbs. He is the perfect size for our house and lifestyle." "General Traits: Bubby has proven to be an intelligent dog and that has made training him quite easy. He can do the usual...sit, stay, shake, lay down....and even open doors (which has been scary for us more than once lol). Bubby is very easy going. He is curious about everything. He likes to play and absolutely LOVES to play with other dogs, that alone makes his day a good one!" "He does very well as a house dog. I wouldn't recommend the Ori Pei as a strictly outside dog due to their sensitivity to heat and the need to keep his wrinkles clean. One other word of caution with owning any dog, but especially this one......be prepared for unexpected Vet bills. Bubby has had several issues over the last year. Some required ER visits, others required surgery and a few only need medicinal treatments. Because of him, we invested in Pet Medical Insurance and it helped quite a bit." He displays several traits from both breeds. "From the Pug: he gets his charm and his sense of humor, he can be an absolute "ham" for lack of a better word. He is always making faces as if to question something you said or as if to be pondering an answer to your question. Bubby is always wanting to play and if you're not paying attention to him, he will get your attention by picking up things he's not supposed to (like socks and underwear) and then come find you so you can chase him to retrieve it. He likes to grab aforementioned "contraband" and then slyly poke his head around the corner just enough that you can see what he has, then boom, it's off to the races! He also wants to be by your side wherever you go and whatever you're doing. He does not like to be left out of anything and will throw a temper tantrum if he's being kept from joining the party. He also snores a little bit (not nearly as bad as a full bred Pug) which is more cute than anything. He is very outgoing, wanting to meet everyone and everything he comes in contact with, truly a great temperament. I believe that he truly loves us and he shows it by general affection. He's even sensed that my wife was having a asthma attack and would not leave her side, but laid in her lap until it passed." "From the Shar Pei: He's bold and fearless, very little scares him or deters him from investigating new things. He can be stubborn when it comes to certain things, which can be tough when you need him to respond to voice commands and he chooses not to. He likes to wrestle with humans and other dogs. He is a great watch dog, and definitely lets us know if something is amiss or there is an un-identified noise or sound. He always barks when someone rings the doorbell (even if it's on the TV) and will run out to the porch to make sure that the coast is clear even if no one is there, he has to make sure. His coat is a soft version of the "horse coat" Shar Pei, as it is soft to the touch but retains the two layer Shar Pei skin type allowing the wrinkles to move around over his undercoat. It does require some general maintenance like washing his wrinkles to keep dirt out and prevent acne from forming in the folds." "Upkeep: Bubby is very easy to take care. His coat requires minimal brushing and his exercise needs are usually just a good walk. He house trained fairly quickly and knows to ring the bells we have hanging on the front door's knob when he needs to go outside. He sleeps a lot and doesn't mind spending most of his day inside the house lounging around and playing with toys. He does have a hard time with the heat (we live in FL) so his exercise needs to be in the morning or evenings, especially during the summer months." "Medical Issues: He has had two surgeries and two treatable conditions during his first 4 months of age. His first surgery was for Cherry Eye, which is a general puppy trait. It was resolved through surgery by our veterinarian who happens to have a success rate of 100% for this particular surgery and we're happy to say that he still maintains that percentage. Bubby also ended up with Entropion, which is common in Shar Pei's. The same doctor performed this surgery as well and did a wonderful job again. We're very lucky to have such a great Vet, he's top notch! Bubby has also had Dermadectic mange, Giardia and a Respiratory infection (as a puppy). He also ate a dime and it cost us $500 to get it removed. Not only was he spending our money, but he was eating it too!" "Well in a nutshell, that's our Bubby, though words can't possibly describe how dear he is to us. He has become a true member of our family and we can't imagine life with out him. Everyone that meets him falls in love with him and we hope you do too!" ___________________________________
